The Pen Museum is an ideal place for school and special community group visits.

Schools

Our museum welcomes parties from Schools and other education establishments to learn about the importance of the Birmingham pen trade to the world (and literacy generally) through our unique collections and interactive displays. Additionally, pupils and students can enjoy a hands-on experience including making a pen nib and sampling calligraphy skills.

We can also customise a visit in terms of both time and activities to suit the age group or specific needs. Please do get in touch by contacting us in the first instance.

School Group rate £3.95 aged 5+ to £5.95 aged 16+ per Student (Teachers: FREE).

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to your team that were working today when I brought in two different groups from our school. They were all really welcoming and accommodating and were happy to adapt when I explained the needs of some of our children. They have all had a great time and I’m sure we will be back again soon.”

Special Groups

Applies usually to Charity and Self Education Groups.

Throughout the Museum there are a range of activities for all to enjoy including writing with a quill and ink, using typewriters, try your hand at calligraphy, use graphology to analyse your handwriting, follow the nib trail, hear first-hand experiences of pen workers, plus an exciting opportunity to make your own nib using the same machinery once operated by women workers in the 19th century.

Special groups rate: from £3.95 aged 5+ to £5.95 aged 16+ per Person (Teachers/Carers FREE)

(Recommended for Children aged 10+)

“Many thanks for looking after our party from RESTORE, we had a great time! The time we spent with you was informative, interactive, and fun. From the welcome at reception and initial introduction to the museum, through all the input from other members of the team and the activities on offer I was extremely impressed and grateful. I look forward to returning with another group and encourage you to keep up the excellent work!”

“Our Crisis members enjoyed a private tour of the Pen Museum where they had the chance to enjoy exhibits and handwrite some calligraphy. They also had the chance to do some typewriting, dress-up and have their handwriting analysed!

The staff at the Pen Museum gave talks and were considerate, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. They even added a lovely hint of humour to the tour too! Our guys were privileged to be offered a tour of Birmingham’s streets and historical slabs outside of the venue! Highly recommended!!!”

Just a note to say how much everybody enjoyed the visit to the Pen Museum yesterday and to thank you for all your help with the organisation. We would be grateful if you could pass on our appreciation to the other volunteers, too, for giving up their time to show us around. We shall certainly be recommending the museum to other friends and local groups and wish you all every success in the future.
